From 1 to 31 October 2016, the Academy of Arts Design of Florence, in the Sala delle Esposizioni in Via Ricasoli 68, corner of Piazza San Marco, is hosting the exhibition of the artist Maria Beatrice Coppi entitled “Light and Darkness” curated by Domenico Viggiano, Secretary General of the Academy of Arts of Design. A selection of fifty works that has clear references to classicism, whose subjects, horses, centaurs, mythical figures, armed heroes or the gods of the greek-Roman pantheon, evoke ancient harmonies and in which frequently has recourse to the subject of the battle, the inner struggle between good and evil.

Maria Beatrice Coppi wanted this Florentine exposure was strongly marked by the presence of elements such as light and dark, elements that mark the human visual perception: “It is the theatrum mundi what appears to anyone who approaches the art of Beatrice Coppi: the story of an inner search that no limits. The heuristic game of existence is here reproduced in subdued tones, as well as in those painful, through form and color that mark the paintings and move in the frescoes to get even in the plasticity of the sculpture, “said Domenico Viggiano.
The exhibition proceeds through compositions by heterogeneous tones: runaway horses that are released into unknown horizons, battles that punctuate the daily tribulations, the light that leads to knowledge, the thrill of an old face, constitute key elements of a unified plot . The theme of man, in its complexity and entirety physical, metaphysical and existential is at the center of each composition as well as this is also the union between body and soul, matter and spirit, rationality and emotion, myth and truth.

Cristina Acidini, President of the Academy of Arts of Design, says that “the expressive fervor of Mary Beatrice Coppi is characterized especially for the inventive talent in the use of artistic techniques, which are well represented in this exhibition. Not only the long and intense artistic experience of Coppi, but also training in restoration (acquired in the worthy University’s International Ragghianti and Baldini) make them available to a wide range of possibilities, from the most common to the most elaborate and rare . For the solidity and firmness of the human figures, symbolic or portraiture, they have chosen the sculpture in stone and tile and naturalistic painting, the latter so inserted in the tradition of use of the difficult and noble fresco technique, learned during training in restoration. A very special search then allowed to Coppi to create heads blown glass with colored inclusions and gold, to go with the bronze and the result is unique, for the obvious fragility of the material and the rarity of specialized knowledge required in the project and execution “.

After classical studies, Maria Beatrice Coppi dedicated himself to painting and later sculpture and ceramics, appropriating different ways of expression: the ceramic wick and the plate, polychrome stoneware, glazed and with grog, the stone carving, bronze, and the blown glass, to arrive then the fresco that enhances through careful sensitivity to light and high poetic tension, because as she says: “I always had a thirst for learning and experiencing all the techniques and materials: oil , tempera, pastels, brush, spatula, fresco paintings, tables, lands and sculpture, in the knowledge that there is always to learn from everything and everybody. ” Maria Beatrice Coppi has followed the example of his teachers from whom he learned the techniques and then continued free expression; among them, of course, it was significantly influenced by Salvatore Cipolla, considered one of the most important Italian sculptors and potters who died in November 2006 in Sesto Fiorentino.
